Episode 77 of The JamBase Podcast, a partner of the Osiris Media Network, features an interview with drummer Homer Steinweiss and multi-instrumentalist/producer Thomas Brenneck of the Menahan Street Band. JamBase’s Andy Kahn spoke to the pair about their upcoming new album, The Exciting Sounds Of The Menahan Street Band, which comes out on February 26th.

Produced by Brenneck and also featuring Leon Michels, Nick Movshon and David Guy, the new album is the first Menahan Street Band LP since 2012’s The Crossing. Brenneck discussed the various projects that he and Steinweiss have been involved in since the last MSB record came out, which includes performing with the late vocalists Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley, among many others. Steinweiss detailed how he and Brenneck first came together as collaborators when the latter joined the former as a member of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings.

Brenneck shared how vocalists Alicia Chakour and Saundra Williams ended up contributing to one of the songs on the album. Chakour is a member of Tedeschi Trucks Band and Williams a member of The Dap-Kings — who along with Jones performed with Phish when they covered The Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main Street on Halloween 2009.

Kahn also talked to Brenneck and Steinweiss about how they collaborate as songwriters, the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on them with respect to their studio work, what’s on tap for 2021 and much much more.
