Those of us living in 2016 didn’t know how good we had it. There were plenty of live concerts to attend and the world around you seemed somewhat familiar. What the inhabitants of 2016 also had was the promise of new Daft Punk music, who just yesterday announced that they are hanging up their helmets and retiring the project. While the groundbreaking electronic duo of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter hadn’t released an album since 2013’s Random Access Memories, the announcement still came as a shock to dedicated fans around the world who remained hopeful of an impending tour/album from the mysterious group.
As tributes to the inspirational duo came flooding in from across the globe, noted live music videographer mk devo took a look into his archives for his own eulogy for Daft Punk. This came in the form of Dopapod‘s cover of “Robot Rock” from the band’s 12/30/16 concert at the Madison Theater in Covington, KY. Taken from Daft Punk’s 2005 Human After All album, Dopapod segues the track into a cover of Pink Floyd‘s “Another Brick In The Wall, Part Two”.

While this pairing of Daft Punk and Pink Floyd may seem a bit mismatched, it stands as a testament to the duo’s influence. Human After All found Daft Punk exploring the influences of garage rock and other lo-fi instrumentalism. Though this originally came as a shock to many fans of the group’s origins in house music, it served as merely a warning shot of things to come as Daft Punk continued to explore new genres. It also fits perfectly into the wheelhouse and influences of Dopapod, a band that skillfully toes the line between rock and electronic—amongst other styles—thus drawing in fans from both sides of the aisle.
