Foo Fighters are currently in the midst of a media blitz in support of their latest album, Medicine At Midnight. As part of the promotional efforts for the new record, the band appeared on The Howard Stern Show where they performed the lead single—”Shame Shame”—as well as a cover of Mountain‘s “Mississippi Queen”.
Prior to the performance of the classic rock radio staple, frontman Dave Grohl informed the venerable radio host that he picked the song just for him. For those who don’t remember, in December 2020 Grohl embarked on The Hanukkah Sessions with his longtime producer Greg Kurstin, a series that saw the two musicians cover a different song by a different Jewish artist for each night of the holiday. Informed by a book Jews Who Rock, the two were elated to find out that Mountain guitarist Leslie West was of the faith and set their sights on “Mississippi Queen”.

The day after publishing their cover of the hit song, Grohl received a call from West’s manager who stated that not only had the guitarist seen the cover but that he was a fan. West’s manager went so far as to give Grohl the musician’s phone number and insist that the two get in touch. Unfortunately, just days after this phone call, West passed away on December 23rd at the age of 75 before Grohl managed to get in touch with him. In his memory, Grohl and the Foo Fighters covered “Mississippi Queen” for Stern, who counted West as one of his friends saying, “Knowing Leslie West has been a pure joy in my life.”

During their February 10th appearance on Stern, Grohl and Foo Fighters discussed plenty of other topics besides Medicine At Midnight and Leslie West. Topics included Grohl’s invitation to drum for Tom Petty on Saturday Night Live back in the 90s, the band’s own 2012 SNL appearance with Mick Jagger, Grohl’s overindulgence in marijuana during a party hosted by Paul McCartney, and plenty of other amusing anecdotes.
