The White Stripes assembled at London’s Maida Vale Studios in November 2005 to perform a session for Nigel Godrich’s From The Basement series. Video of the entire session has been shared today for the first time along with previously unreleased B-Roll from the set.
Highlights from the session originally aired as part of the From The Basement pilot episode. Godrich tapped Sophie Muller as director. The White Stripes — consisting of Jack White and Meg White — roll through six songs for the session, which was unveiled to celebrate the pair’s recently released Greatest Hits compilation.
Jack and Meg kick off the set with “Blue Orchid” from 2005’s Get Behind Me Satan. The White Stripes then cover Captain Beefheart’s “Party Of Special Things To Do” before returning to Get Behind Me Satan for “Forever For Her (Is Over For Me),” “As Ugly As I Seem,” “Little Ghost” and the “Red Rain” closer.
“The dream of From The Basement is to capture great performances with the most direct and beautiful coverage possible,” explained Nigel Godrich, “both sonically and visually. We were so fortunate early on to have the support of Jack and Meg who instinctively understood the concept of the show and so came to be part of it. As a result we have this amazing snapshot of their fantastic energy and style. It’s an intimate and direct performance, something magic, powerful and special. A day I will not forget.”
“It was beautifully filmed and the sound quality makes a performance on a regular TV show sound like a wax cylinder recording,” added Jack White. “No host. Thank God.”
