Billy Strings and his band were back at Tipitina’s on Thursday night for the second of two virtual performances at the New Orleans venue this week.

Following night one on Wednesday, Thursday’s show inside the empty venue opened with a fitting cover of Steve Goodman‘s “City of New Orleans”, followed by one of Strings’ newer originals in “Bronzeback”. The first set of the night blended more Billy Strings originals in “Hide & Seek”, “Watch It Fall”, and “Taking Water” with covers of “Been All Around This World”, Gordon Lightfoot‘s “Cold on the Shoulder”, Doc Watson‘s “Little Sadie”, and finally The Stanley Brothers‘ “A Robin Built a Nest on Daddy’s Grave” to send viewers into set break.

Strings returned to the stage to kick off the second set with his live debut of Tony Rice‘s “Plastic Banana” in tribute to the late bluegrass guitarist. The band continued with more covers including Carter Stanley‘s “Going to the Races”, “Ain’t Nothing to Me”, and “June Apple”, before returning to the Strings songbook with “Must Be Seven” and the recently debuted “Show Me the Door”.

The second set kept rolling with a pair of David Grisman covers as a nod to the mandolinist’s birthday earlier this week on March 23rd with “Sugar Hill Ramble” right into “Unwanted Love”. The show came to an end with the band’s cover of Doc & Merle Watson‘s “Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar”.
