Gov’t Mule has released a new live album which highlights the rock band’s February 1997 performance at the Cotton Club in Atlanta, GA.
Simply titled, Live At The Cotton Club / Atlanta / February 20, 1997, the album released to streaming platforms only on Friday (3/26) via Evil Teen Records is the third installment of the band’s streaming-only series.
This album notably marks the first streaming-only live release featuring Gov’t Mule’s original trio lineup of guitarist/singer Warren Haynes, late bassist Allen Woody, and drummer Matt Abts. The setlist that evening featured a mix of ZZ Top, Van Morrison, Grateful Dead, Memphis Slim, and Tom Waits covers, in addition to original songs which appeared on Gov’t Mule’s self-titled debut released two years prior in 1995 and songs that would go on to appear on 1998’s Dose.

Haynes added in a press statement reflecting on the band’s February 1997 concert,
I seem to remember it being a hot sweaty night even though it was February, and you can feel it in the recordings. The band was definitely in experimental mode, going down some new roads and taking a lot of chances. It’s great hearing this show again after all this time — especially re-mixed and re-mastered. The music sounds as fresh as it felt when we played it.

Gov’t Mule will return to the stage next month for a run of outdoor shows at the Westville Music Bowl in New Haven, CT scheduled for late April and early May.
