Iconic rocker Iggy Pop and legendary organist Dr. Lonnie Smith teamed up to cover Donovan’s “Sunshine Superman.” The pair released the single today ahead of its inclusion on Smith’s Breathe album, which is due out on Blue Note Records March 26.
Pop contributed to both “Sunshine Superman,” which closes Breathe, and the album’s opening track, “Why Can’t We Live Together.” The rest of the LP’s eight tracks come from Dr. Lonnie Smith’s 75th birthday celebration in 2017 at New York City’s Jazz Standard. Breathe is described as the companion to All In My Mind, Dr. Lonnie Smith’s 2018 trio album.
“I was playing with my trio at Arts Garage in Delray Beach in Florida,” Smith explained. “Iggy would come by and say he wanted to play with me. I let him play slaparoo and he loved it. He enjoyed playing with us. We thought about recording a few songs, so we went in with my trio backing us up, and it worked.” Both the cover of Donovan’s 1966 hit and a take on Timmy Thomas’ 1972 gem “Why Can’t We Live Together” were recorded with guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg, drummer Johnathan Blake and percussionist Richard Bravo at a studio in Miami.
