LivePhish Announces Atlanta 7/23/97 Archival Release [Audio]

LivePhish has announced that its next archival Phish release will be the band’s 7/23/97 concert at Atlanta, GA’s Lakewood Amphitheatre. Soundboard audio of the entire show will be available to LivePhish subscribers on Friday. The release was revealed on Monday on SiriusXM Phish Radio‘s From The Archives by Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro, who played some selections from the new live drop for fans tuning in.

The July 23rd show came as Phish’s third stop on their U.S. summer tour, coming two shows after the July 21st tour opener in Virginia Beach which served as Dinner and a Movie episode nine. Much like that show, the Lakewood Amphitheatre appearance saw the band exploring songs they had debuted during its 19-show European jaunt as well as its new “cow funk” musical approach.

Things got off to a hot start as Phish opened the show with a nearly-14-minute “Julius” and shot out of the starting gate. The first set continued with the recently-debuted “Dirt”, followed by “NICU” which segued into another European debut, “Dogs Stole Things”. Set one kept on rolling with quick hits of “Ginseng Sullivan” and “Water in the Sky”, followed by another song debuted in Europe, “Limb By Limb”. Another first set improvisational highlight came with “Split Open and Melt” before things wound down with “Billy Breathes” and finally “Possum” to close out the first frame.

Phish jumped right back into gear for set two, opening up with “Punch You In The Eye” before the improvisational peak of the entire show, “Ghost”. This rendition of the song—which was also first played in Europe—stretched on for nearly 27-minutes and saw teases of “Spooky” and “On Your Way Down”. This extended improvisation put the band’s new cow funk aesthetic on full display for audiences as Phish locked into one communal groove.

“Sample In A Jar” arrived next as a cool-off song before the band launched into a “You Enjoy Myself” which would see teases of the Jeopardy! theme, what Phish.net describes as “a very unusual SOAMule-like jam segment,” and no vocal jam. In the midst of “You Enjoy Myself”, however, came a detour into Joe Walsh‘s “Rocky Mountain Way” before a show-closing “Chalk Dust Torture”. Upon returning to the stage, Phish encored with Edgar Winter Group‘s “Frankenstein” to close the show.

Phish’s 7/23/97 concert at Lakewood Amphitheatre in Atlanta will be available on LivePhish beginning at midnight on Friday following its Thursday, noon ET premiere on Phish Radio. Scroll down to listen to fan-captured audio of the famous “Ghost”.
