Matt Kelly Guests With Grateful Dead On This Date In 1985

74

The Grateful Dead welcomed singer-songwriter, guitarist and harmonica player Matt Kelly on this date in 1985 at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. Kelly co-founded the band Kingfish in 1973, which Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir would join briefly from late 1974-’76 as the Dead went on hiatus from touring.

Matt also contributed to the Grateful Dead ‘70s albums Wake Of The Flood and Shakedown Street as well as The Closing Of Winterland live collection. He also appeared on Weir’s 1981 solo album Bobby and the Midnites and in 1995 became a co-founding member of the Weir-led Ratdog.

So Kelly certainly didn’t feel like a stranger when he joined GD at Nassau on March 28, 1985. Matt emerged after show opener “Truckin’” to blow some harp on the Howlin’ Wolf blues number “Smokestack Lightning” ahead of a gritty solo from Jerry Garcia. The two musicians had a bit of a back and forth before Kelly departs and the band heads into “High Time.”

The concert also contained a “China”/”Rider” first set closer and a “Scarlet”/Fire” second set opener, two of the Dead’s most classic pairings. The fully segued second set also featured “Looks Like Rain” and a post-“Space,” set-closing section of “Gimme Some Lovin,’” “The Other One,” “Black Peter” and “Sugar Magnolia.” The Grateful Dead brought the evening to a close with an encore of “Keep Your Day Job,’ which they only played in the mid-’80s.
