My Morning Jacket Ends One Big Holiday With Full Album Performances On This Date In 2018

It’s been three years since My Morning Jacket went big for their One Big Holiday 2018 finale. That year, MMJ performed all seven of their studio albums in chronological order during the three-show destination event at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The March 5 conclusion featured their final three albums: 2008’s Evil Urges, 2011’s Circuital and 2015’s The Waterfall along with an encore that included the band’s newer material as well as the event’s namesake.

The three-and-a-half-hour performance got underway with a full-set showing of MMJ’s Grammy-nominated 2008 LP Evil Urges. The set kicked off with the title track on which MMJ welcomed the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, who would also join in on “Highly Suspicious” in the Evil Urges set. The oldest album MMJ played that night, the Evil Urges excursion also included a few notable bust outs including the first “Thank You Too!” since December 2012 as well as the first performances of adjacent tracks “Sec Walkin” and “Two Halves,” since October 2010 and July 2013 respectively.

My Morning Jacket fit both Circuital and The Waterfall into the second set. Preservation Hall Jazz Band would reemerge for Circuital’s “Holdin On To Black Metal.” After the marathon run through both albums, MMJ retook the stage for a two-song encore that featured just the second live performance of their 2016 single, “Magic Bullet,” with the first coming the New Year’s Eve pervious in Broomfield, Colorado. PHJB joined toward the end of the song adding wild horn runs over searing guitar. Although they played the song during the It Still Moves performance, MMJ brought the event to a close with an apropos revisiting of “One Big Holiday,” which also featured PHJB.
