The Mars Volta will reissue their entire studio discography along with bonus material as part of the massive La Realidad De Los Sueños vinyl box set due out later this year.

Announced last week, La Realidad De Los Sueños—which translates to “The Reality of Dreams”—will arrive on 18 black vinyl LPs, and will be limited to just 5,000 copies when it arrives on April 23rd via Clouds Hill. The box set will include the band’s debut EP Tremulant (2002) along with all six of their full-length studio albums beginning with 2003’s De-Loused In The Comatorium through 2012’s Noctourniquet.

Additionally, La Realidad De Los Sueños will come with previously-unreleased audio from the De-Loused in the Comatorium sessions on an album entitled Landscape Tantrums, in addition to a photobook containing exclusive behind-the-scenes photography and two commemorative pins.

“We have taken care to give the sound more space. To make it sound more lively and organic than the original, which was mastered for digital formats,” said audio engineer Chris von Rautenkranz, who co-managed the remastering process for the vinyl reissues.

The massive box set reportedly sold out almost immediately following its announcement on March 5th. Thankfully, 1,700 units will be held back for fans to purchase exclusively and brick-and-mortar independent record stores on April 23rd.

“People don’t know the hoops Omar [Rodríguez-Lopéz] had to go through to get the initial deal with Universal put into place,” singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala said of the arduous process of working with Universal Music Group to obtain the master recordings for this box set in a recent interview. “The fact that he had to go into this mob-like meeting room and be belittled for being the artist and fighting for these things they thought weren’t important. And you can tell they’re not important to them, because they’re just a corporation. To them, it’s like, ‘Oh, the McRib is back. Who cares if it’s not real meat or real bread. There it is, we need to make some fuckin’ money.’ He fought hard for it.”

“Everything was in my vaults, all the original artwork and masters, but it took time to deal with bureaucracy and to correct things like making the ‘jellyfish man’ the actual front cover to ‘De-Loused In The Comatorium’, as was intended, and not the ‘egg-man’ on the Universal version,” Rodríguez-Lopéz also explained in dealing with their former label. “We’d talked about doing them as they were originally: interesting colors, picture discs, and stuff like that. But we decided that to make it sound the best, 180g vinyl was the way, just to make sure we undo haphazard damage Universal did with these bootlegs.”

The Mars Volta broke up back in 2013, although Rodriguez-Lopez and Bixler-Zavala continued on with The Mars Volta drummer Dave Elitch and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea with a new project named Antemasque in 2014. The group released their first and only album with a self-titled debut that same year.

There has been speculation of a possible Mars Volta reunion in the years since the band’s 2013 breakup, with the most recent murmurs coming in 2019.
