As we approach the one-year mark since the COVID-19 pandemic effectively shut down the live events industry, many artists are approaching the anniversaries of their final live concerts. One such artist is Tyler Childers, who on Sunday shared a live performance of “Nose On The Grindstone” taken from Lexington, KY’s Rupp Arena on February 28th, 2020.
The show came at the infancy of Childers stint opening for Sturgill Simpson‘s A Good Look’n Tour. The months-long run of concerts began at the tail-end of February and was slated to run through May with shows across the United States and Canada, but was halted after only nine shows, the last of which took place on March 10th at North Charleston, SC’s North Charleston Coliseum.

“Nose On The Grindstone”, taken from Childers’ 2015 OurVinyl Sessions, draws on the 29-year-old singer-songwriter’s experiences growing up in Lawrence County, KY, just over 100 miles from the Lexington arena he played on 2/28/20. In the heart of coal country, Childers’ options in town were limited, especially as the coal industry dried up and the economic lifeblood of the community.
At the same time that the centuries-old industry was beginning to wilt, the advent of widely-available prescription pain medication and hundreds upon thousands of pill mills throughout the region decimated the youth of Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, and beyond. Throughout the song, Childers’ father, who “worked like a mule minin’ Pike County coal,” delivers the prescient advice, “keep your nose on the grindstone and out of the pills.”
