Lynyrd Skynyrd released video of “Saturday Night Special.” The footage comes from the renowned rockers’ August 21, 1976 performance at the Knebworth Festival in the UK.
Lynyrd Skynyrd plans to release the entire Knebworth play as a live LP and concert film, Live At Knebworth ‘76’, which will be available in multiple formats on April 9 via Eagle Rock Entertainment. The album and concert film document Skynyrd’s historic appearance at the famed Knebworth Festival in 1976 which saw the southern rockers performing alongside other acts like Todd Rundgren and headliners The Rolling Stones.
The footage of Skynyrd’s performance was previously only available via the 1996 film Freebird…The Movie where it was intercut with interviews. Now, the band’s set is presented uninterrupted and in its entirety. The set featured the classic Lynyrd Skynyrd lineup including frontman Ronnie Van Zandt and the three-guitar attack of Gary Rossington, Allen Collins and Steve Gaines as well as bassist Leon Wilkeson, keyboardist Billy Powell, drummer Artimus Pyle and backing vocalists Cassie Gaines, JoJo Billingsley and Leslie Hawkins known as The Honkettes. The performance features a number of Skynyrd classics like “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Gimme Three Steps,” “Free Bird” and the aforementioned “Saturday Night Special.”
