Brendan Bayliss Covers Phish & More For ‘Wine Not?’

87

Brendan Bayliss continued his Wine Not? livestream series on Friday. The Umphrey’s McGee guitarist previewed his upcoming Cluster Flies cover of Phish’s “Twist” and more.

Brendan’s rendition of the Farmhouse cut “Twist” came about halfway through his set. Bayliss performed the song as a preview for the upcoming debut of the Cluster Flies version set to debut soon on JamBase ahead of Cluster Flies‘ April 30 release date. Brendan talked a bit about doing the cover and mentioned that his Wine Not? version lacked the pedal steel frequent UM collaborator Mike Racky added to the Cluster Flies version. The Umphrey’s guitarist will also appear on an upcoming episode of The JamBase Podcast to discuss the “Twist” cover and his experience with Phish and their music.

But first BB acknowledged that it was his wife Annie Bayliss’ birthday weekend and that he shaved his mustache, a running Wine Not? joke. “For anybody out there who’s unemployed or who doesn’t have funds to buy a gift for your girlfriend or wife,” he said, “just grow a mustache and then take it away as a gift.” Bayliss then began the music with Ryan Adams’ “Magnolia Mountain,” which he played on a gorgeous Gibson Hummingbird he borrowed from his neighbor and frequent Wine Not? collaborator T-Bird. Brendan then got into some UM material with “Cut The Cable” which led into a fleet-footed rendition of Huey Lewis and the News’ “I Want A New Drug.” Peter Tosh’s “Steppin’ Razor” came next before an ‘80s section with 38 Special’s “Hold On Loosely” encompassing Men At Work’s “Overkill.”

Bayliss then delivered the 2020 UM single “Easter In Quarantine”. He co-wrote and recorded the tune with fellow Umphrey’s guitarist Jake Cinninger and it arrived around this time last year. Next, Brendan welcomed Annie for the stellar John Prine duet “In Spite Of Ourselves.” Annie also stayed on to help on Little Feat’s “Willin.” Brendan then mentioned that a request was made for Jeff Austin’s “What The Night Brings,” which he indicated that he had never played without Jeff and proceeded to deliver a fantastic version. After the tune, Bayliss showed off a 30db — he and Jeff’s collaborative project — poster and told a humorous story about a St. Patrick’s Day 30db incident.

Next, Brendan addressed the “Twist” cover. “There’s a Phish tribute album coming out to help out everyone at JamBase,” he explained. As mentioned above, Bayliss also indicated that his Wine Not? version lacked Racky’s pedal steel. “The version on the album that’s coming out is gonna sound way better,” he said, “because Mike Racky plays pedal steel on it and it’s like SHINE all over it. So Just imagine some shining Racky.” BB then delivered his stellar take on “Twist,” which has a bit of a bluesy feel and featured Bayliss showing off his vocal range.

Wine Not? continued with U2’s “Running To Stand Still” and Neil Young’s “Old King” ahead of an UM entry in “Upward.” The covers kept rolling with Led Zeppelin’s “Ramble On,” Tom Waits’ “I Hope I Don’t Fall In Love With You” and Christopher Cross’s “Sailing.” Bayliss brought the stream to a close with Umphrey’s “You & You Alone.”
