Twenty-five years ago today Dave Matthews Band issued their second major label studio album, Crash. Produced by Steve Lillywhite and recorded between October 1995 – January 1996 at Bearsville Studio in Woodstock, New York and New York City’s Green Street, Crash remains DMB’s best-selling album as per Wikipedia. Matthews and company celebrated the release by performing at State Palace Theatre in New Orleans on May 6, 1996. Highlights from the concert were broadcast by MTV as Crashing The Quarter and new footage featuring all but one song from the evening as well as the soundcheck recently surfaced on YouTube thanks to Copperpot-OEW5 and serves as this week’s Full Show Friday selection.
The lineup featured on Crash finds Dave Matthews backed by bassist Stefan Lessard, drummer Carter Beauford, fiddler Boyd Tinsley and multi-instrumentalist LeRoi Moore. Matthews wrote all 12 tracks on the LP with his band mates credited on some of the songs. Founding member Peter Griesar, who left the group in 1993, penned Crash opener “So Much To Say” with Dave and Boyd.
Most of the songs on Crash remain live staples through the present including “So Much To Say,” “Two Step,” “#41,” “Too Much,” “Tripping Billies” and the title track. “Drive In Drive Out” has only been played twice since 2016, while “Let You Down” was last performed twice in 2015 after the song was shelved following 1996. Additionally, “Cry Freedom” hasn’t appeared in a DMB setlist for nearly five years.
DMB’s show at the State Palace Theatre came one day after the group played the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Fittingly, the quintet went heavy on material from Crash at the concert featured in Crashing The Quarter. Matthews and his mates performed every song from the LP except “Let You Down” and “Cry Freedom.”
“Tripping Billies,” complete with the “Nature” intro, served as opener. A pairing of “Two Step” and “Drive In Drive Out” followed along with “Crash Into Me” and “#41.” Next up was “What Would You Say,” one of five tracks from 1994’s Under The Table And Dreaming to make the setlist in NOLA. “Say Goodbye” then led into a “Jimi Thing” missing from the footage below.
DMB continued on with “So Much To Say” before “Proudest Monkey” bled into “Satellite.” A “Too Much” featuring interpolations of “Golden Years” and “Fame” was next ahead of “Granny” and “Lie In Our Graves.” The improvisational highlight was a ten-minute “#36,” a song that eventually evolved into “Everyday.” Dave and the band ended the main set in the Big Easy with “Ants Marching.” Matthews went solo to kick off the evening’s encore with “Little Thing” and “Typical Situation.” The rest of the band then returned for the “All Along The Watchtower” finale.
The footage ends with 90 minutes of video captured at soundcheck. “Drive In Drive Out” is followed by unusual slow versions of “What Would You Say.” Then, DMB played “Crash Into Me” before teaming for an “Instrumental Jam.” The group went on to work out “#41” and ends soundcheck with a run of “Granny,” “Jimi Thing” and “Tripping Billies.”
