Grateful Dead Delivers 20-Minute ‘Foolish Heart’ On This Date In 1991

110

The Grateful Dead stopped by Orlando Arena in Orlando, Florida on this date in 1991. The April 9, 1991 concert included a 20-minute “Foolish Heart” which unfolded just before “Drums” and “Space.”

The show got off to a rollicking start with a spirited “Hell In A Bucket.” Keyboardist Bruce Hornsby then added accordion to “Cold Rain And Snow” followed by guitarist Bob Weir leading the band through Willie Dixon’s “Little Red Rooster,” which saw some nice interplay between Weir on slide, Hornsby on piano and keyboardist Vince Welnick on organ. Guitarist Jerry Garcia then stepped to the mic for “Loose Lucy” followed by Weir on Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece” and Jerry leading the way on a poignant “It Must Have Been The Roses.” “Let It Grow” would close out the first frame.

The classic pairing of “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider” got the second set underway with the band arriving in “Rider” at a speedy clip. A tight “Saint Of Circumstance” followed and melted into the opening strains of “Foolish Heart,” which the band did well in building up and orchestrating the many moving parts in the intro before Jerry started singing. Garcia also had a nice moment rattling off some guitar and revving up the band ahead of the bridge. Jerry took a bit to get into the solo coming out of the bridge but built it up nicely like an eagle catching a thermal and reeling off some hot licks here and there before stopping on a dime and dropping back into the song.

The first jam got started in earnest about 8 minutes and Jerry gets some nice circular jamming going with loops of repetitive runs before bringing things down a bit. Next, Garcia hits on the main riff before returning to the final verse and chorus ahead of a blissy, cooled down beginning to the final jam which features Hornsby adding sometimes jazzy, sometimes honky-tonk touches on the piano in a jam driven by the rhythm section, bassist Phil Lesh as well as drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart in anticipation for “Drums.”

“Space” would find its way into a cascading minor jam and subsequently “The Other One” which in turn led into “Wharf Rat,” perhaps Jerry’s best vocal performance of the evening. “Throwing Stones” then trickled in out of “Wharf Rat.” Bobby gives a characteristic growl to the closing of “Throwing Stones” as the Rhythm Devils beat on the toms which perfectly segued into the classic closer, “Not Fade Away.” The Grateful Dead would retake the stage for an encore of “Brokedown Palace” to bring the evening to a close.
