Today marks what would have been Eddie Hazel’s 71st birthday. The late great Parliament-Funkadelic guitarist was born on April 10, 1950 in Brooklyn. Hazel sadly died on December 23, 1992 from complications due to liver failure.
Eddie teamed up with Parliament-Funkadelic founder George Clinton in the late-1960s when Clinton was looking for a band to back up his then-doo wop group the Parliaments. The band would morph into the cosmic psychedelic funk pioneering outfit, Funkadelic.
In 1970, Funkadelic released their self-titled debut album and quickly followed with the landmark Free Your Mind… and Your Ass Will Follow that same year. But it was their third record that contained Eddie’s signature song, the beloved “Maggot Brain,” which was also the name of the 1971 LP.
Hazel would go on to have some memorable live performances of “Maggot Brain” over the years, showcasing his immense talent as a soloist. In honor of Eddie, watch a video compilation containing “Maggot Brain” solos and more below:
