This Friday, Matt Sweeney and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy (Will Oldham) issue the collaborative album Superwolves digitally via Drag City with physical releases to follow on June 18. Today, the pair unveiled their latest Superwolves single, “Resist The Urge,” along with a video for the track.
Work on the follow-up to 2005’s Superwolf started five years ago when Sweeney and Oldham began writing new music for their project. In 2020, the pair entered Strange Weather in Brooklyn to record the 14-track LP and completed the album at Nashville’s Butcher Shoppe. Guests on Superwolves include bassists David Ferguson and Mike Coltun, guitarists Mdou Moctar and Ahmoudou Madassane, keyboardist Mike Rojas and drummers Souleyman Ibrahim, Ryan Sawyer and Peter Townsend.
Matt Sweeney and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy tapped celebrated skateboarder Kevin “Spanky” Long and photographer/skateborder Atiba Jefferson to make the “Resist The Urge” video. “Spanky and Atiba’s video rules. We try to make the listener feel insanely at home in a musical space. Atiba and Spanky have made us feel like we own a share of the skateable world,” said Bonny.
