Phoebe Bridgers’ Smashed ‘SNL’ Guitar Fetches Over $100k At GLAAD Auction

They say a broken clock is right twice a day and it turns out a broken guitar is worth about 200 times more when it was smashed by Phoebe Bridgers on national television. Over the weekend the Danelectro guitar from Bridgers’ famous—or infamous, depending on one’s opinion of destroying instruments—debut on Saturday Night Live sold for a whopping $101,500 during an auction as part of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media Awards on Thursday.

Anyone who spent any time on Twitter in early February will recall the uproar that Bridgers caused when she smashed her guitar against a fake stage monitor at the end of her song “I Know The End” on SNL. While the controversy eventually died out—though not until after every amateur music critic managed to weigh in—interest still appeared markedly high as the instrument brought in six figures to the LGBTQ+ rights organization.

While the advocacy group was not able to reveal the auction winner’s identity, it is safe to assume that it wasn’t David CrosbyAnthony Ramos, the supervising producer of the GLAAD Awards, told Variety, “Obviously it’s someone who’s either a huge Phoebe Bridgers fan or someone who is really into broken guitars or someone who really wants to help us accelerate our work for the LGBTQ community, and hopefully it’s someone who checks all three of those boxes.”

Bridgers, who identifies as bisexual, was nominated for Outstanding Breakthrough Music Artist for the award ceremony, though she ultimately lost out to viral rapper Chika.

“The other side of it is that we’re so grateful to Phoebe for donating the guitar but also for being someone who’s a visible and out part of the community in rock music,” Ramos told Variety. “She made a great album, and we love all she’s doing and love working with her.”
