Denver funk and soul favorites The Motet will return to Red Rocks Ampthitheatre on Friday, June 4th for a hometown blowout marking the band’s sixth annual headlining show at the famed outdoor venue.

The Motet’s annual Red Rocks party has become a beloved tradition for Colorado music fans as the summer gets underway. Over the years, the band has brought together a diverse array of talent—from the legendary Medeski, Martin & Wood to ’90’s hip-hop heavyweights Jurassic 5 to the debut Red Rocks performance from Vulfpeck. They’ve also doubled down on the funk with contemporaries Lettuce, Galactic, and The New Mastersounds—and this year promises to continue that funky early-summer tradition.

While The Motet—comprised of Dave Watts (drums), Joey Porter (keys), Garrett Sayers (bass), Ryan Jalbert (guitar), and Drew Sayers (sax/keys)—recently parted ways with vocalist Lyle Divinsky and trumpeter Parris Fleming, the band will have plenty of heavy-hitting assistance on hand. Special guest singers scheduled to perform with The Motet at Red Rocks include soulful Vulfpeck crooner Antwaun Stanley and Trey Anastasio band horns/vocalists Jennifer Hartswick and Natalie Cressman. Guitarist Eric Krasno and The String Cheese Incident percussionist Jason Hann will also be on hand for the performance.

The show will also feature an opening set by new project Eric Krasno & The Assembly, which features Krasno on lead guitar and vocals alongside Otis McDonald (bass, vocals), Wil Blades (organ, keyboards), James VIII (guitar, vocals) and Curtis Kelley (drums, vocals). According to a post from Krasno, the group will be debuting a new crop of material “blending soulful vocals and deep grooves.”

The Motet began the year with the release of new single “And The Beat Goes On“, an updated cover of The Whispers‘ classic featuring Nigel Hall, as the new-look outfit continues recording its latest album.

As Drew Sayers notes in a press release, “This really is the most excited I’ve ever been about the music we are making. The time away from touring has actually brought us closer together as a group and more united in the sound we want to create. So the opportunity to bring out some of our favorite singers and players to perform with us at Red Rocks and celebrate live music is an incredible honor, and one we have been looking forward to all year.”

Tickets for The Motet at Red Rocks on June 4th, 2021 go on sale this Friday, April 23rd, at 10 a.m. MT here. For more information, head to the band’s website.

Red Rocks has been steadily filling up its spring/summer concert schedule following the announcement that it will reopen for live events at a capacity of 2,500 beginning later this month. For a full list of upcoming Red Rocks shows, head here.
