Watch Bruce Hornsby & Sonny Emory Duet On ‘King Of The Hill’ In 2014

75

Pianist Bruce Hornsby shared video featuring a performance of his classic “King Of The Hill” with drummer/percussionist Sonny Emory. The clip was filmed on August 1, 2014 at the Chautauqua Amphitheater in Chautauqua, New York.

Hornsby and Emory were on hand to open for the Pat Metheny Unity Group as part of a three-week tour. Sonny was the drummer for Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers at the time. He’s since left Bruce’s employ to join Eric Clapton’s band. Bruce Hornsby originally wrote and recorded “King Of The Hill” for his 1998 studio album, Spirit Trail.

“In 2014 Pat Metheny asked me to do a tour with him, opening with a solo piano set and then sitting in with his great ‘Group.’ I asked him what types of venues we were playing, expressing a concern about the fragility of solo piano in outdoor, semi-large spaces,” Hornsby wrote in a note accompanying the video. “I told him I’d consider it if he was good with Sonny Emory and me playing duo sets, and he was instantly in. Here’s a charged-up version of ‘King Of The Hill’ from that three-week run, captured at the beautiful Chautauqua Amphitheater near Buffalo, NY. Faster!”
