Acclaimed bassist Freekbass resumed his prolific ways by releasing the single “Get Down” yesterday. JamBase is pleased to premiere the video for the incredibly funky tune.
“Get Down” continues a string in which Freekbass has unveiled a new single along with accompanying video each month since the pandemic began in March 2020. For his latest track, the Cincinnati-based musician honors his Ohio-Funk roots.
“Ohio is where I get my funk-DNA from, and this new single is my comfort food,” Freekbass tells JamBase. “From Bootsy to Zapp to the Ohio Players and Midnight Star, these are the sounds and grooves that made we want to first pick up a bass and learn how to write songs.”
“As a kid, I was hearing these sounds, and was simultaneously seeing visuals that enhanced the world on MTV. Or I was watching classic musicals with my mom. So, music was always aural and visual to me, which is why creating a video with each new single just seemed like the thing to do,” Freekbass adds. “I’ve been blessed to have access to the incredible talents of director, Angie Wilson, which helps to bring the sounds to the screen. With ‘Get Down’ we took an element from our live shows: I always do my bass solo, wearing a furry panda mask. So we just launched off of that. Because when you’ve got a bunch of pandas in a room, you’ve got a party!”

Freekbass & The Bump Assembly return to the stage for a hometown show at Cincinnati’s Urban Artifact on July 2 with a radio simulcast available via RadioArtifact.com. Then, the band heads to Roanoke, Virginia for an appearance at the 5PTS Outdoors Concerts at Wasena Park on July 3.
