The latest installment in the Grateful Dead‘s All The Years Live archive video series is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This entry highlights the Dead’s performance of “The Other One” from Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, CA on October 17th, 1974.
Taken from The Grateful Dead Movie, capturing the band’s legendary five-night stand at Winterland October 16th–20th, this performance of the Anthem of the Sun classic finds the Dead in fine form. Though equipped with only one drummer in Bill Kreutzmann—as Mickey Hart was on leave from the group from 1971–1976—Bill The Drummer was still more than capable of capturing the locomotive percussion of “The Other One” the propels the song into Bob Weir‘s lyrics of mythical schoolbuses.
Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux notes in the video’s description,
A centerpiece of the Grateful Dead’s second album, Anthem Of The Sun, The Other One broke off from its complete That’s It For The Other One suite in 1971 aside from a 1972 one-off, and a few performances of Jerry’s Cryptical Envelopment in 1985. Skull & Roses contains what is often considered the definitive live version, taking up a complete side of vinyl of that 1971 masterpiece.
