Barely Breaking Even (BBE) Music released its Modern Love tribute to the late David Bowie on Friday. One of the 17 artists featured on the compilation was Khruangbin, who covered “Right”.
Taken from the Starman’s 1975 gold-selling record Young Americans, the sleek veneer of “Right” is a perfect fit for the Thai-funk trio. With all the textbook hallmarks of a Khruangbin song, the band is able to maintain the backroom decadence that makes “Right” a sleeper pick from Young Americans. From Mark Speer‘s reliably reverberated Stratocaster guitar licks to the understated rhythm section of Donald “DJ” Johnson and Laura Leezy, this cover of “Right” could even be mistaken for a track cut from Con Todo El Mundo.
Also appearing on Modern Love are Jeff Parker, We Are KING, Meshell Ndegeocello, Helado Negro, Matthew Tavares, Nia, and more. Instead of delivering covers of Bowie’s many hits, the philosophy instead was to explore the artist’s extensive back catalog. With the guidance of an array of diverse artists, BBE’s Modern Love compilation aims to reintroduce audiences to an artist they already knew so well.
