Rhino will reissue the Grateful Dead‘s 1971 eponymous live album known as Skull & Roses on June 25 in tribute to the LP’s 50th anniversary. The set features previously unreleased recordings from the Dead’s July 2, 1971 at San Francisco’s Fillmore West including a version of “Good Lovin’” shared today.
The original Skull & Roses contained 11 tracks recorded between March 24 – April 29, 1971. Each track has been remastered for inclusion on the 50th anniversary reissues which arrive on vinyl as well as with the recordings from Fillmore West on CD and digitally through streaming services and as downloads.
“Good Lovin’” is one of 10 tracks from the Dead’s July 2, 1971 concert featured on expanded Skull & Roses reissues. Guitarists Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh, keyboardist Ron “Pigpen” McKernan and drummer Bill Kreutzmann formed the band’s lineup at the time of the show. “The Grateful Dead’s 1971 live album was a little light on Pigpen songs, but this 17-minute version from the Fillmore West packs a lot of Pigpen onto the expanded album.”
