Luther Dickinson and Brandon “Taz” Niederauer appeared on JamBase partner Osiris Media’s Comes A Time podcast. The guitarists chatted with hosts bassist Oteil Burbridge and comedian Mike Finoia about Col. Bruce Hampton, Bootsy Collins and more.
Oteil kicks of the podcast by introducing Niederauer and North Mississippi Allstars’ Luther Dickinson in the context of Oteil and Luther’s Roots Rock Revival music camp, which Brandon began attending when he was around eight years old. Niederauer is now a Roots Rock Revival instructor. Oteil, Luther and Brandon talk Roots Rock Revival, then move on to another subject they and many other artists have in common, stories about the late great Col. Bruce Hampton.
While Oteil played extensively with Hampton in Aquarium Rescue Unit, Dickinson highlighted a discussion he had with the legendary musician. “Col. Bruce, I never played in his band, but we had a conversation in Atlanta that changed my life,” Dickinson recalled before extrapolating on the advice The Colonel gave him. “The biggest one was, be it 100 people or 100,000 people, don’t let the audience adjust your frame of mind. Train yourself to be in your music no matter where, or who, or when you’re playing. Because if it’s 10 people or 10,000 people, and you let that mess up your frame of mind, that’s just your ego fucking with you…when Colonel told me that it really set me free.”
After some hilarious reminiscing on Col. Bruce stage etiquette, Brandon chimes in on his relationship with Hampton. “Colonel, I miss him every day. He believed in me before I believed in myself. He was absolutely crazy, the things he did but he supported me always. There were many times he freaked me out. I know everyone went through this, but when he guessed my birthday the first time he met me. He said it, March 16, 2003. And I was like ‘uh dad, I don’t know if I’m safe here,” Brandon said to laughs from the panel. “But it turned into such an amazing thing where he was such a great mentor to me.”
Luther and Brandon also talk about their respective bands and Mike fields a question from Luther about stand-up comedy and crowd interaction which translates well to the improvisational music world. Luther also asks Brandon about working with legendary funk bassist Bootsy Collins. “That was crazy,” Niederauer said about the experience.
