Margo Price honors the three kings in her latest single, “Love Live The King”, released on Wednesday. A live staple of the singer-songwriter’s concerts for years, the song pays tribute to Elvis Presley, Martin Luther King Jr., and John Lennon.
At the outset, the organ-driven song seems like a loving tribute to three men who changed the world in their own way. As listeners wade through the lyrics, however, it is clear that Price does not hold these three kings up to a golden standard. Instead, “Long Live The King” makes the important statement that—while Presley, King, and Lennon all had a profound impact on the world—that they were all humans with their own flaws. This sentiment is best summed up in the verse about John Lennon, where Price sings, “He was a feminist/And an asshole too.”
“‘Long Live The King’ is a song about three extraordinary men who changed the course of history for the better,” Price said in a press release. “But no one is without flaw and they each had a duality in their personalities. This song is also about not idolizing celebrities or putting people up on a pedestal because we are all human and we all make mistakes.”

Along with the release of the new single, Price has announced the launch of her own mail-order record club, A Series Of Rumors. Over three monthly shipments, Rumors club members will receive a limited edition, autographed box of 7″ vinyl records featuring music from Price’s 2020 album That’s How Rumors Get Started, backed by exclusive B-sides, covers, and unreleased collaborations. Some are lost songs from That’s How Rumors Get Started sessions at Hollywood’s East West Studios and the now-defunct Butcher Shoppe in Nashville; others are from pre-production sessions in Texas with Band of Heathens, or lockdown recordings with Price’s band The Pricetags.
The initial installment will see “Long Live The King” appear as the B-side to Rumors highlight “Hey Child,” in addition to “Twinkle Twinkle” backed with Price’s take on Bobbie Gentry‘s “He Made a Woman Out of Me,” and “Letting Me Down” backed with “I’d Die For You” (Synthphonic). The first set of records will ship now, and subscribers will receive their second and third deliveries in June and July respectively.
