New York Venues Can Return To Full Capacity If Audience Is 100% Vaccinated

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced in a recent press conference that all of the state’s venues can return to full capacity. The news comes as iconic venues in New York City like Radio City Music Hall and Beacon Theatre have announced plans to reopen.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, the embattled Governor stated that venues can return to full capacity if 100 percent of attendees are vaccinated. He also reiterated the current state guidelines that allow for venues to host 50 percent vaccinated and 50 percent unvaccinated attendees.

“All venues have the option of going to 100 percent capacity for fully-vaccinated people. Some venues, and we authorized, you can be 50 percent vaccinated, 50 unvaccinated, but that limits the capacity of the venue,” Cuomo said. “The sections that are fully vaccinated means people can sit right next to each other, which also, by the way, are a more enjoyable way to participate in the event. You go with your buddies, your family, to see a ball game, you want to sit next to your family, that happens in a vaccinated section.”

In the end, the decision is left up to the venue whether or not it wants to allow unvaccinated people to attend events. As Governor Cuomo pointed out, that would require the implementation of continued safety measures that have been seen throughout the pandemic.

“The unvaccinated section has a seat or two empty in between people, so it limits the capacity of the venue,” Cuomo said. “We’ve authorized 50/50. But the venue can choose to go to 100 percent vaccinated.”

This news comes in the wake of Radio City’s recent announcement that it will screen a yet-untitled Dave Chappelle documentary indoors on June 19th for the closing night of the Tribecca Film Festival, marking the first event at Radio City since the pandemic. Wednesday also saw the announcement from the Beacon Theatre that it will host Trey Anastasio for its first event back on June 22nd and 23rd, featuring a full capacity audience of vaccinated fans.

Madison Square Garden on Sunday also allowed in 15,000 fans for the Knicks‘ playoff opener agains the Hawks. This marked the largest indoor gathering in the state of New York since the start of the pandemic.
