Real Estate Covers My Bloody Valentine, John Cale & More For ‘Lagniappe Sessions’

77

Real Estate shared covers of My Bloody Valentine, John Cale and more for Aquarium Drunkard’s Lagniappe Sessions. The Brooklyn-based rockers crafted the covers prior to the release of their remotely created EP, Half A Human, which arrived on March 26.

Real Estate recorded the covers for Lagniappe Sessions in much the same way they created Half A Human, that is to say in a remote fashion. Among the five diverse songs from four different members of the band are Parsley Sound’s “Ocean House,” Roger Miller’s “Little Green Apples” and Jawbone’s “Java Jelly” along with songs from the aforementioned bands including My Bloody Valentine’s “You Never Should” and Velvet Underground founding member John Cale’s “Please.”

Real Estate frontman and guitarist Martin Courtney selected the latter and shared his thoughts on the John Cale tune with Aquarium Drunkard:

Love the production on the early 70s John Cale records, particularly the drums. How did they do it? Vintage Violence being one of my favorite albums, we could have probably done any song off of it, basically just picked “Please” because I like the line about sneezing. Felt timely. Beautiful melody/harmony in the chorus. Had to look up what a hansom cab is. Nice image.

Guitarist Julian Lynch also spoke the My Bloody Valentine nod:

“You Never Should” is one of my favorite tunes off of My Bloody Valentine’s Isn’t Anything. I had wanted to cover this song for quite some time. I even considered it for my own Lagniappe Session a while back. I’m glad I kept it tucked away until now, though, because I’m so happy with how the cover sounds with the full band.
