The Tedeschi Trucks Band have slowly but surely started integrating a number of The Allman Brothers Band classics into their repertoire over the years one of which is “Whipping Post.” Guitarists Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi first led the TTB in playing a mostly instrumental, truncated version of “Whipping Post” four years ago today at Orlando’s Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center – Walt Disney Theater.
“Whipping Post” was debuted by the Tedeschi Trucks Band one day after the death of Gregg Allman. Derek Trucks joined Gregg and The Allman Brothers Band in 1999 and remained a member of the group through their final show in 2014. Trucks starred in the TTB version of “Whipping Post,” which emerged out of “The Storm” to close the 12-piece act’s main set in Orlando.
Susan Tedeschi played harmony on the song’s main theme and then focused on rhythmic work as her husband soloed. Tedeschi sang the chorus after Derek had built his solo to a frothy peak. Gregg wrote “Whipping Post,” which was included on the first ABB studio album and was a staple of their live sets for 45 years. The Tedeschi Trucks Band have covered “Whipping Post” 35 times since that night in Orlando as per Setlist.FM with the most recent version occuring on February 21, 2020 in Washington D.C. and nearly all have served as the coda to “The Storm.”
