Tedeschi Trucks Band To Release ‘Layla Revisited’ LOCKN’ Cover Set With Trey Anastasio [Watch]

83

After nearly two years, fans will finally be able to relive the legendary Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs cover set collaboration between Tedeschi Trucks Band and Trey Anastasio at LOCKN’ 2019. On July 16th, Fantasy Records will release the set in full for the first time, along with an additional bonus studio track from Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi.

As TTB took the stage alongside Trey Anastasio on the night of August 24th, 2019 in Arrington, VA, nobody in the crowd had any idea of what they were about to experience. The lineup description merely read, “Tedeschi Trucks Band with special guest Trey Anastasio,” and nothing more. As the band opened with “I Looked Away”, the crowd enjoyed a well-chosen cover. Then they moved into “Bell Bottom Blues”, and the picture began to take shape. Finally, by “Keep On Growing” it was clear that this all-star collaboration was covering Derek And The Dominos‘ seminal 1970 album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.

While TTB and Trey was far from the only high-profile collaboration that weekend (not even the only one featuring the Phish guitarist), it has gained a certain mystique by not being available for listening on platforms like nugs. It now appears that TTB had much bigger plans for the release of audio from this show, as Layla Revisited (Live At LOCKN’) goes beyond a simple soundboard upload. In addition to mastered audio of the entire evening’s performance, along with original artwork, Layla Revisited (Live At LOCKN’) features a bonus studio track of Trucks and Tedeschi’s performance of “Thorn Tree In the Garden”, delivered for the first time ever as a duo with no additional accompaniment.

“By the time that I started playing guitar, the sound of Duane Allman’s slide was almost an obsession,” Trucks said about Layla. “His playing on Layla is still one of the high-water marks for me. The spirit, the joy, the recklessness, and the inevitability of it. My dad would play that record for me and my brother to fall asleep to and further sear it into my DNA.”

The historical connections to Derek And The Dominos and Layla run deep in TTB, with the seminal album released on November 9th, 1970, Susan Tedeschi’s birthday. Nine years later, Chris and Debbie Trucks were such fans of the album they were inspired to name their firstborn son Derek. When little Derek grew up, he went on to spend 15 years in The Allman Brothers Band, in addition to touring extensively with Eric Clapton.

Along with the album announcement, Fantasy Records has shared pro-shot footage of “Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad?” taken from 8/24/19. Scroll down to see the album artwork along with a full tracklist. Click here to pre-order Tedeschi Trucks Band Layla Revisited (Live At LOCKN’).
