Genesis recently announced the North American leg of their The Last Domino? reunion tour, part of the legendary rock band’s first tour in 14 years. It is sure to be a memorable run as Genesis — vocalist/drummer Phil Collins, guitarist Mike Rutherford and keyboardist Tony Banks as well as longtime touring bassist Daryl Stuermer and Phil’s son Nic Collins on drums — not only embark on their first tour since 2007 but also hit the road as the world emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic.
In honor of Genesis’ return to the stage, JamBase takes a look at the band’s landmark concert film from another memorable tour, Genesis’ appearance at London’s storied Wembley Stadium in 1987 to cap off their Invisible Touch Tour.
In support of their 1986 album of the same name, the Invisible Touch Tour was Genesis’ largest ever, touting a whopping 112 dates from September 1986 to July 1987. The tour culminated in a massive four-night sold out stand at Wembley July 1 – 4. Genesis captured the run for posterity in their 1988 concert film, Live At Wembley Stadium, which carries the distinction of being the first concert shot with the fledgling technology of high definition.
“Nearly 300,000 people at Wembley,” Tony Banks recalled in Genesis’ 2007 autobiography. “I thought at the time, and I still think now, that moment was the peak of our career.” The performance featured a career-spanning set from the Phil Collins frontman era which kicked off with “Mama” from Genesis’ 1983 self-titled album. The band continued with the title track to their 1981 album Abacab before getting into Invisible Touch material with the “Domino” suite ahead of the stellar tune, “That’s All.”
The band would also perform Invisible Touch instrumental “The Brazillian” as well as the LP’s hit singles “Land Of Confusion,” “Tonight, Tonight, Tonight,” “Throwing It All Away” and the title track. The set also featured a drum off between Collins and touring drummer Chester Thompson before the band reached back with “Los Endos” from Genesis’ 1976 album, Trick Of The Tail, the first to feature Collins as lead singer after Peter Gabriel’s departure. The concert film comes to a close with “Turn It On Again” from the band’s 1980 album Duke, which kicks off a rock and soul history lesson of sorts in a covers medley that included “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love” “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “Twist and Shout,” “Reach Out (I’ll Be There),” “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin,” “Pinball Wizard” and “In the Midnight Hour.”
