Happy Birthday Prince: ‘Rave Un2 The Year 2000’ Highlights

124

Prince Nelson Rogers, the man best known simply as Prince, was born on this date in 1958. The Minnesota native became one of the most iconic artists in rock history thanks to his versatility as a performer, musician, songwriter and producer. Among the honors The Purple One achieved were induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2004, seven Grammy Awards, an Academy Award and over 100 million records solo worldwide. Sadly, Prince died on April 21, 2016 at the way-too-young age of 57 due to an accidental overdose of fentanyl.

In December of 1999, Prince recorded a live concert special at his Paisley Park Studios facility that aired through In Demand Pay-per-view on New Year’s Eve. The special was titled Rave Un2 The Year 2000 and after it was long out-of-print, Prince’s estate struck a deal to air the 113-minute set on PBS stations in 2019. The Purple One performed many of his most beloved songs and welcomed a bevy of special guests including Maceo Parker, Lenny Kravitz and Morris Day and The Time.

To celebrate what would have been Prince’s 63rd birthday, here’s a look at three songs from Rave Un2 The Year 2000 that the estate added to The Purple One’s YouTube channel. Up first is a smoking version of Prince’s 1986 single “Kiss” in which the musician shows off his skills on both bass and electric guitar. Then, the artist who was known by an unpronounceable symbol at the time, leads his band on the funk and rock workout “Baby Knows” featuring Maceo Parker on sax. Finally, Prince fronts a frenetic rendition of “Raspberry Beret” b-side “She’s Always In My Hair.”

The complete Rave Un2 The Year 2000 has been available for PBS supporters to view for the past few years but will be taken down at the end of the month. Watch the highlights mentioned above:
