LeRoi Moore Plays Final Show With Dave Matthews Band On This Date In 2008

82

Dave Matthews Band founding saxophonist LeRoi Moore played his final concert with DMB at Nissan Pavilion in Bristow, Virginia on this date in 2008. Moore was injured in an ATV accident on June 30 two days after the show and died from complications from his injuries on August 19, 2008.

Dave Matthews Band released LeRoi’s last show as Live Trax Volume 14 on March 24, 2009. Last year, Moore’s final performance was broadcast on the anniversary of his death as part of the DMB Drive-In webcast series. The broadcast saw Dave Matthews sharing his remembrances of LeRoi and his final show.

The concert got underway with Dave easing the band into the prelude to “Don’t Drink The Water.” Drummer Carter Beauford then hits a cascade of cymbals before DMB jumps into a rousing “Don’t Drink The Water” with Moore and trumpeter Rashawn Ross blasting. “Old Dirt Hill (Bring That Beat Back)” follows a pairing of “So Damn Lucky” and “The Dreaming Tree,” with the latter containing a “Chocolate Rain” interpolation. After “Idea Of You,” “Corn Bread” and “You Might Die Trying” Dave (on electric guitar), guitarist Tim Reynolds and Carter would go it alone for a bust out of “The Space Between” for the first time in four years, totaling 335 shows.

The show also included the debut of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” which featured LeRoi on baritone sax for the song’s iconic horn line. The set closed out with a seamless section of “Out of My Hands,” “Everyday,” “Ants Marching (with a “Jimi Thing” tease), “So Much to Say” and “Anyone Seen the Bridge,” which saw “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” “Funk #49” and “Rhapsody in Blue” interpolations. The DMB classic “Too Much,” which LeRoi has co-writing credits on, brought the set to a close. The four-song encore began with “Sister” followed by companion numbers “Pantala Naga Pampa” and “Rapunzel.” The final song LeRoi performed with DMB was a cover of Sly & The Family Stone’s “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” which saw the beloved sax player joining in on vocals.
