Jerry Garcia brought the Jerry Garcia Band to Madison Square Garden in New York City for the first time on November 15, 1991. Audio of the concert arrives as GarciaLive Volume 16: November 15, 1991 Madison Square Garden through Round Records next Friday, June 25. JGB’s “(What A) Wonderful World” encore has been shared as latest preview of the live archival release.
The Louis Armstrong-popularized “(What A) Wonderful World” was co-written by Bob Thiele and George David Weiss. Garcia and his band — consisting of bassist John Kahn, keyboardist Melvin Seals, drummer David Kemper and vocalists Jaclyn LaBranch and Gloria Jones — closed out the night with an emotion-laden take on the song.
“There was an incredible atmosphere. This was the same place where the New York Knicks played and I’d also seen other concerts there on TV by so many amazing people,” LaBranch told Relix, the outlet that premiered the track before adding, “It was just another show in a great place. The thing I really liked about working with Jerry was we did our shows and we had a good time. Nobody was better than anybody else, we just played our music. It was about the music.”
The Jerry Garcia Band debuted their take on “(What A) Wonderful World” at their Fall Tour 1991 opener at Landover, Maryland’s Capitol Centre a few weeks before the group’s MSG debut as per Setlist.FM. Stream the version from GarciaLive Volume 16 below:
