Los Lobos shared a cover of Barrett Strong’s “Misery.” The song is set to land on the renowned Los Angeles-born band’s covers album, Native Sons, arriving on July 30th via New West Records.
Native Sons sees Los Lobos paying tribute to Los Angeles-based artists that influenced the band. Los Lobos announced the album early last month and shared two singles: Thee Midniters’ “Love Special Delivery” and The Beach Boys’ “Sail On, Sailor.” The group now follows with Barrett Strong’s “Misery.”
Barrett Strong co-wrote a number of Motown classics and recorded Berry Gordy’s first hit with the Motown forerunner label Tamla, “Money (That’s What I Want),” in 1959. “Misery” would arrive as a single in 1961.
When the famed Detroit label moved to Los Angeles in the early 1970s, Strong followed suit, as Los Lobos frontman David Hidalgo explains in the liner notes to Native Sons. “This is probably one of my favorite songs on the album,” he wrote of “Misery.” “Barrett moved to L.A. when Motown did.”
