Tedeschi Trucks Dust Off ‘Looking For Answers’ At Jacksonville ‘Fireside Live’ Finale

52

Tedeschi Trucks concluded their two-night run at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville on Saturday. The hometown Fireside Live finale saw the band dusting off Susan Tedeschi’s “Looking For Answers” during the second set.

Tedeschi Trucks — vocalist/guitarist Susan Tedeschi, guitarist Derek Trucks, bassist Brandon Boone, keyboardist Gabe Dixon, drummer Tyler Greenwell and vocalist Mike Mattison — got the show underway with “Gonna Move.” Mattison led the band through the song which was written by Paul Pena and perfomred by both The Derek Trucks Band And Susan Tedeschi pre-Tedeschi Trucks Band. Derek and Susan then turned to more recent material with the funky rocker “Signs, High Times” from the 2019 TTB album Signs, which features Susan and Mike sharing lead vocal duties.

The breezy soul-inflected “Don’t Drift Away” came next before Derek delivered the slide inro to the chugging “Done Somebody Wrong.” After “Where Will I Begin,” the band offered up Derek And The Dominos’ “Keep On Growing,” a version of which is set to appear on TTB’s upcoming live album Layla Revisited (Live at LOCKN’). The TTB classic “Don’t Let Me Slide” from the band’s 2011 Grammy-winning debut LP Revelator would count as the penultimate song of the first frame ahead of closer, Bobby Bland’s “I Pity The Fool.”

Tedeschi Trucks opened the second set with the title track to TTB’s 2015 album Let Me Get By. Next came the bust out of “Looking For Answers.” The Susan Tedeschi-penned song appears on her 1998 sophomore solo album, Just Won’t Burn (the band performed tracks from the album the night previous), and was last performed by the Susan Tedeschi Band in 2009, as per Setlist.FM. Over a decade later Susan led Tedeschi Trucks through the song with Derek adding some nice slide touches to the tune over Greenwell’s shuffling beat.

Mattison then sang the Sleepy John Estes-written, Taj Mahal-popularized “Leavin’ Trunk” which once again featured fiery slide from Derek as well as a killer organ solo from Dixon and stretched to over 10 minutes. Derek and Susan’s Let Me Get By co-write with frequent collaborator Doyle Bramhall II “Just As Strange” followed ahead of The Allman Brothers Band classic “Dreams.” The ABB favorite saw Dixon shining once again, this time taking lead vocal duties. Big Bill Broonzy’s “Key To The Highway” followed ahead of a classic from the TTB catalog, “Midnight In Harlem.” The title track to TTB’s 2013 album, “Made Up Mind,” brought the second set to a close. Tedeschi Trucks would encore with their pairing of “I Want More” and Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice.”
