Tedeschi Trucks Kick Off ‘Fireside Live’ Tour

68

Tedeschi Trucks got their Fireside Live Tour underway at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Florida on Friday. The socially distanced hometown concert saw Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi and their band delivering Tedeschi Trucks Band tunes spanning the group’s entire career along with songs from Susan’s solo catalog and more.

Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks kicked off their first show in front of people since February 2020 with a spirited “Statesboro Blues” to raucous applause. As always Trucks delivered some fiery slide work with Tedeschi belting out the Blind Willie McTell, Allman Brothers Band-covered blues classic. The band then got into original material with two songs, “Do I Look Worried” and “Whiskey Legs” from TTB’s 2013 album Made Up Mind. Vocalist Mike Mattison then sang his song “Life Is Crazy” ahead of another Made Up Mind track “It’s So Heavy.” The group then delivered the title track from TTB’s 2019 EP High & Mighty followed by “Laugh About It” off the band’s 2016 LP Let Me Get By. Tedeschi Trucks would bring the first frame to a close with the classic “Bound For Glory.”

“Simple Things” off the band’s Grammy-winning 2011 debut album Revelator began the second set with Derek delivering the tasty slide line over the shuffling beat. Susan then shined on Junior Wells’ “Little By Little,” which she included on her 1998 sophomore solo album Just Won’t Burn. After “Part Of Me,” Tedeschi Trucks would also perform the title track to Just Won’t Burn. The band then got into some classic covers beginning with Allen Toussaint’s “Get Out My Life Woman” led by Mattison followed by Derek And The Dominoes’ “Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad” which is set to appear on TTB’s upcoming live album Layla Revisited (Live at LOCKN’).

“Anyhow” came next ahead of the band’s classic pairing of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” and “Sugaree” from the Grateful Dead repertoire. The blues standard “How Blue Can You Get” would bring the second set to a close. For the encore, Tedeschi Trucks once again returned to material from Tedeschi’s solo career with the 2002 Wait For Me track “The Feeling Music Brings.” The song has TTB roots as Susan penned it with Derek and the band’s late keyboard player and flutist Kofi Burbridge.
