The JamBase Podcast: Lukas Nelson

Episode 82 of The JamBase Podcast, a partner of the Osiris Media Network, features an interview with Lukas Nelson. JamBase’s Andy Kahn interviewed Nelson and discussed the new Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real album, A Few Stars Apart, which comes out on Fantasy Records tomorrow, Friday, June 11.

Nelson was interviewed over a video call from his home in Maui, Hawaii. The chat mostly focused on A Few Stars Apart, which was recorded last year with producer Dave Cobb.

The recording sessions were held in Nashville at historic RCA Studio A, where Nelson’s father, outlaw country legend Willie Nelson’s pictures hang on the walls. Nelson discussed what it was like working with Cobb, whom he first met while collaborating on the feature film, A Star Is Born. Lukas revealed it was Neil Young’s guidance that influenced the decision to record the album on analog 8-track tape.

Nelson talked about his songwriting process and how the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the content on A Few Stars Apart. He detailed time spent during last year’s lockdown with his family at their property near Austin, Texas, when some of the songs on A Few Stars Apart were written. Kahn asked about Nelson’s spirituality and how it impacts his songcraft and they touched on other themes explored on the album, such as the impact of the pandemic, the importance of family and more.

At the time of the conversation, Lukas Nelson & POTR had on their upcoming tour schedule only two shows in September in Colorado. Nelson made clear the band intends to tour in support of the album, with more tour dates in the works — including four newly-added shows in June to celebrate the release of A Few Stars Apart.
