Warren Haynes Kicks Off Solo Tour In Eatontown

67

Gov’t Mule frontman Warren Haynes began a six-show solo tour of the Northeast on Tuesday night at Suneagles Golf Club in Eatowntown, New Jersey. Haynes presented a setlist filled with original material from his various projects and a batch of choice covers.

Warren went with “Old Friend,” a song he wrote with Chris Anderson for The Allman Brothers Band’s 2003 album Hittin’ The Note to open his first of two sets last night. He then paid tribute to New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen with a cover of “Big Muddy” before covering Bill Withers’ “Hope She’ll Be Happier.” Next up was “Back Where I Started,” which he wrote with longtime ABB band mate Derek Trucks for inclusion on The Derek Trucks Band’s Already Free LP in 2009. Haynes then performed Elmore James’ “Blues Before Sunrise” and his own “Beautifully Broken.” The first set of the tour came to a close with a run featuring a take on the Eagles’ “Wasted Time” and original gems “The Real Thing” and “Two Of A Kind Blues.”

Last night’s second set started with “Patchwork Quilt,” Haynes’ tribute to Jerry Garcia. Warren then plucked “Captured” and “Forsaken Savior” from the Gov’t Mule catalog before performing “Company Man” from his Ashes & Dust solo album. Next, the guitarist went back to Hittin’ The Note for “Desdemona,” a song Warren co-wrote with Gregg Allman. “Ship Of Fools,” the evening’s lone Grateful Dead cover followed.

Warren continued on with “Endless Parade,” a tune Gov’t Mule originally released on High & Mighty in 2006. Tuesday’s second set ended with a rare take on Muddy Waters’ “Long Distance Call.” The 61-year-old musician returned to cap the evening with a memorable two-song encore. Up first was a cover of “Into The Mystic” by Van Morrison. Haynes then treated fans to the beloved “Soulshine” to end the tour opener.
