Widespread Panic’s first set on Sunday at Red Rocks consisted entirely of Bloodkin covers. The show wrapped a sold-out, three-night run at the outdoor venue near Denver.
Widespread Panic has a long association with Bloodkin — who also formed in Athens, Georgia — and has covered many of the Bloodkin’s songs. Bloodkin co-founder Daniel Hutchens died in May at age 56 following a stroke.

Widespread Panic Dusts Off Black Sabbath & Jimi Hendrix Covers At Red Rocks
Hutchens was close with WSP, having several times performed with the members of the band on stage and in the studio. “A picture-filled songwriter, Friend, and story provider to so many, Daniel Franklin Hutchens lives on through his Heart-touched Music and Being,” Widespread Panic wrote in a memorial to Hutchens.
Sunday’s first set started with “Can’t Get High,” one of several Bloodkin songs regularly covered by Panic over the years. The tribute to Hutchens also featured fellow WSP setlist staples “Henry Parsons Died” and “Who Do You Belong To?” as well as bust outs of “Wet Trombone Blues” and “Success Yourself” (both last played in 2013 with Hutchens and Bloodkin’s Eric Carter) and “Quarter Tank of Gasoline.”
The opening set also saw Widespread Panic debut covers of “Trashy” from Bloodkin’s 2021 album Black Market Tango and “Mercy Train To Bogart” off 1996’s Creeperweed. “End Of The Show,” with John Bell on mandolin, was the last of Bloodkin tributes, closing a first set for the first time
Panic’s original “Postcard” started the final set of the weekend at Red Rocks. “Rock” followed, ahead of a pairing of “Pleas” and “Honky Red.” The set continued with “Protein Drink / Sewing Machine” and “Diner” segueing into “Jamais Vu.” A sequence of “Airplane,” a cover of Funkadelic’s “Red Hot Mama” and “Fishwater” filled out the rest of the second set. “Blue Indian” was chosen as the first song of Sunday’s encore. A cover of “I’m So Glad” transitioned into “Love Tractor” as WSP’s Red Rocks run came to a conclusion.
