Chaka Khan Makes Surprise Appearance At Newport Folk Festival

Chaka Khan made a surprise appearance at Newport Folk Festival’s Folk On event. The legendary vocalist performed during the Allison Russell-curated final set on Sunday, July 25.

The collaborative event billed as Allison Russell Presents: Once & Future Sounds: Roots & Revolution was made up of “BIPOC/Queer/Ally visionaries with a mission of placing Black Womxn and active Allies at the center of the conversation.” Those who joined Russell were Yola, Celisse, Amythyst Kiah, Brandi Carlile, Kam Franklin, Adia Victoria, Joy Oladokun, Yasmin Williams, Margo Price, Daisha McBride, Kyshona, Sunny War and Caroline Randall Williams, among others.

Chaka Khan’s unannounced visit to Fort Adams State Park included her leading all-star renditions of her hits “Ain’t Nobody” and “I’m Every Woman.” Newport Folk Presents Folk On! 2021 continues today in Newport, Rhode Island and runs through Wednesday, July 28.
