Greensky Bluegrass guitarist Dave Bruzza revealed the band recorded a new studio album during the pandemic. Bruzza confirmed the news during an interview featured on the latest episode of JamBase partner Osiris Media Network’s Inside Out with Turner & Seth podcast.
Inside Out wTnS hosts Rob Turner and Seth Weiner spoke with Bruzza in the dugout at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, Georgia before GSBG’s June 26 concert at the home of the Atlanta Braves’ Triple-A affiliate. Turner and Seth also chatted with Andrew Lincoln, the quintet’s lighting director.
Dave recalled working with lyricist and “warrior poet” Aaron Allen with whom he co-wrote “It’s Not Mine Anymore,” “Murder Of Crows” and “Cathedral Eyes.” More recently, Allen contributed to Bruzza’s “Streetlights” which started a conversation about the new Greensky studio album. The guitarist confirmed “Streetlights” was one of the songs the five-piece recorded during sessions held over three weeks in Vermont last September. “It was actually a song I tried to write that wasn’t about my personal life and it turned out to be a very deep song about my personal life,” Dave told Rob and Seth regarding “Streetlights.” Greensky Bluegrass’ last studio album was 2019’s All For Money.
“We don’t exactly know what’s on there yet, but we recorded a lot of songs,” Bruzza added in reference to a batch of new material that includes over 20 new tunes. “Everyone was writing.” Dave also noted he took a couple of months off from writing and recording at the start of the pandemic. He then starred in Take Cover, a series of solo livestream concerts. He spoke about that experience and reuniting with Greensky last summer to film eight The Leap Year Sessions livestream performances at The Pageant in St. Louis. Additional topics hit upon were struggling to write setlists after so much time off, attending the final Grateful Dead shows, how deeply he felt the loss of John Prine and more.
Episode 106 of Inside Out with Turner & Seth ends with an interview featuring GSBG LD Andrew Lincoln. He spoke of how it was refreshing in a sense to have such a long break from touring. He also discussed the influence of Widespread Panic LD Paul Hoffman and Phish LD Chris Kuroda on his work, turning his passion for fishing into a new side project and many additional topics.
