Rock’s Dad, Dave Grohl has revealed that he was ripping off “old disco” in Nirvana’s Nevermind. In a clip taken from his new docuseries, From Cradle to Stage — a collaboration with his Mum.
The clip shows an interview-style chat between Dave Grohl and Pharrell Williams
“I wanted to be a drumline kid. But I can’t read music,” says Grohl, opening the video. “I couldn’t then and I still can’t now.
“All I wanted to do was be in a line of drummers all playing drums.”
“I was decent…” says Pharrell. “I wasn’t like, your level.”
“Just stop saying I’m a good drummer because I’m the most basic fucking drummer,” retorts Grohl.
“If you listen to Nevermind, the Nirvana record… I pulled so much stuff from The Gap Band and Cameo, and Tony Thompson. On every one of those songs.”
He starts clapping that iconic drum line from Nevermind‘s opening track, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’.
“That’s old disco! That’s all it is!”
The video compares a snippet from ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ with a clip from The Gap Band’s ‘You Dropped a Bomb on Me’.
“I told Tony Thompson that. He came to my house for a barbecue with somebody and I was like, ‘Man, I just want to thank you because I owe so much… I’ve been ripping you off my whole life. And he goes, ‘I know.’”
It’s not the first news of Dave Grohl and his love for disco. Foo Fighters are just two weeks away from the release of their next album HAIL SATAN.
The album is being released under the band’s disco alter egos, The Dee Gees.
