Iggy Azalea Is Being Accused Of Blackfishing Again, Following New Music Video

78

Iggy Azalea has been criticised time and time again for appropriating Black culture. Now, following the release of her new music video for ‘I Am The Stripclub’, she’s been accused of blackfishing.

The new music video shows Iggy in a black wig, with what looks like a pretty dark fake tan. A Twitter user summed it up pretty well. He wrote, “You coulda gave me 8,000 tries to guess who this was for $1 million dollars and I would’ve never guessed Iggy Azalea.”

People are pointing out the Australian rapper is unrecognisable in this video.

They’re also saying it’s blackfishing.

Iggy Azalea disagrees. She says, “This is the color I wear, it’s on the arm color of a tan white person. I’m not wearing crazy dark makeup at ALL.”

“Everyone in the club scene looks darker, it’s a club scene! I’m sick of ppl trying to twist my words or make shit a problem when all I’ve done is try a hair color.”

Azalea’s response to the allegations isn’t ideal. However, behind the scenes shots from the video do show her skin looking significantly lighter — suggesting it could be a production issue.

There’s long been criticism against Azalea for cultural appropriation. It comes from her “forced Blaccent” as well as her fashion style, dancing, and the music she creates being heavily influenced by Black culture.

However, Iggy Azalea generally rejects these claims. Back in 2019, she told Cosmopolitan, “You could ask one person of the same race, ‘Does this affect you?’ and they will say yes.”

“But another person will say no. They could be from the same place, same everything, but have different perspectives about it.”

Blackface and blackfishing are incredibly problematic issues. Read more about these issues and their effect on pop culture here.
