Umphrey’s McGee closed out a two-night run at The Caverns Above Ground Amphitheatre on Saturday with a special appearance by multi-instrumentalist Kurt Ozan. The Luke Combs sideman joined UM on pedal steel for a sandwich of songs in the first set.
Opening up with “Dump City”, Umphrey’s moved through “Crucial Taunt” and the first “Deeper” of 2021—last played on 2/15/20 per All Things Umphrey’s—which segued into “Wife Soup”. The band then brought out Ozan to lend his pedal steel talents to “Great American”, which transitioned into the year’s first “Push & Pull” (last played on 3/5/20), before a reprisal of “Great American”. Umphrey’s McGee then bid farewell to Ozan before closing the set with “Puppet String”.
Umphrey’s McGee took care of the rest of the show in-house with a second set opening “Hourglass” which transitioned into “Phil’s Farm”. “Utopian Fir” came next before the biggest bust out of the evening came with Huey Lewis and the News‘ “Heart And Soul”, which Umphrey’s had not performed live since 4/19/14 in Austin, TX (585 shows ago).
Following a reprisal of “Utopian Fir”, the band was “Much Obliged” to cut through the “Red Tape” and ultimately emerge as “Partyin’ Peeps” before “Plunger” closed the second frame. Upon returning for the encore, Umphrey’s paired up “Kula” and “Den” to send everyone home.
