Todd Snider returned to his faithful Purple Building in East Nashville on Friday for a surprise livestream dubbed Return Of The Storyteller. The stream—which was Todd’s first to feature an in-studio audience—comes ahead of his return to the road on Saturday at The Caverns in Pelham, TN.
For those of you keeping score at home, this marks the fourth name change for what was once Snider’s weekly livestream. After beginning life as What It Is at the onset of the pandemic in March 2020, the Peace Queer went live every Sunday morning from East Nashville at 11 a.m. CT sharp. Soon enough, the series pivoted to The First Agnostic Church of Hope And Wonder—which would also serve as the title of the troubadour’s new fatback album—before ultimately becoming The Get Together. Just like with First Agnostic Church, the new title of this stream will also serve as the name of a new album, this one a live release set to be culled from Snider’s upcoming 50-plus date tour schedule.
Ahead of that tour, however, Snider warmed up to a limited crowd at his personal studio. In anticipation of the coming tour, Snider tried out some new acoustic arrangements of First Agnostic Church songs that—on the record—feature a full band that helped Todd achieve the desired “funk in back and busking up front” sound reminiscent of funk and reggae records of the ’60s and ’70s.
