William Tyler & Luke Schneider Release ‘Understand’ EP

86

William Tyler and Luke Schneider‘s new Understand EP arrived today via Leaving Records a few days earlier than expected. The four-track release was recorded in one session.

Understand consists solely of instrumentals the pair put together and captured while quarantining in Nashville last year. The title was inspired by Ted Chiang’s short story of the same name.

Luke Schneider recorded pedal steel guitar and banjo parts for the EP, while William Tyler played electric and acoustic guitars as well as synthesizer and bass on Understand. The pair went beyond using just their usual instruments to explore ambient and krautrock soundscapes. Jake Davis both produced and mixed the collaborative release.

Next up for William Tyler is Lost Futures, an album he recorded with Marisa Anderson. The eight-track collaborative LP is due out through Thrill Jockey on August 27.
