Billy Strings Joins The Allman Betts Band For ‘Midnight Rider’ At Hoxeyville

101

This year’s Hoxeyville Music Festival headliners shared the stage on Saturday when The Allman Betts Band welcomed guitarist Billy Strings to sit-in. Strings played electric guitar with The Allman Betts Band on a cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Midnight Rider” at the festival in Wellston, Michigan.

Billy emerged for “Midnight Rider” after The Allman Betts Band kicked off their set with originals “Savannah’s Dream” and “Magnolia Road” as well as a take on the Grateful Dead’s “Shakedown Street.” Devon Allman sang lead vocals on “Midnight Rider,” which his father, the late Gregg Allman wrote with Robert Kim Payne. Strings both soloed and dueled with Duane Betts on the extended version of the song.

The Allman Betts Band focused on originals following Strings’ guest appearance with “Southern Rain,” “Shinin’” and “Pale Horse Rider” among songs played at Hoxeyville. A cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Blue Sky” was also thrown in for good measure.
