Even as volunteers were gathering and work had already begun, Bonnaroo 2021 was just canceled. Waterlogged conditions as a result of Hurricane Ida have soaked the grounds. This is the second year in a row that the event has been canceled with last year’s event sidelined like all other major festivals by Covid-19.
In a statement on their facebook page:
“We are absolutely heartbroken to announce that we must cancel Bonnaroo. While this weekend’s weather looks outstanding, currently Centeroo is waterlogged in many areas, the ground is incredibly saturated on our tollbooth paths, and the campgrounds are flooded to the point that we are unable to drive in or park vehicles safely.
We have done everything in our power to try to keep the show moving forward, but Mother Nature has dealt us a tremendous amount of rain over the past 24 hours, and we have run out of options to try to make the event happen safely and in a way that lives up to the Bonnaroo experience.
Please find ways to safely gather with your Bonnaroo community and continue to radiate positivity during this disappointing time. WE WILL SEE YOU ON THE FARM IN JUNE 2022!
All tickets purchased through Front Gate Tickets will be refunded in as little as 30 days to the original method of payment.”
This video shows that work had already been well underway even as the Hurricane was barreling through the Gulf Coast.
The lineup this year was stacked with heavy hitters from Foo Fighters to Megan Thee Stallion, Lizzo, Tame Impala, Tyler the Creator, Lana Del Rey, My Morning Jacket, the Disco Biscuits, Run the Jewels, Glass Animals, Lil Baby, Deadmaus, Leon Bridges, Turkuaz with Jerry Harrison and Adrian Bellew, and more.
Some musicians have already started landing in Tennessee.
This is yet another blow to an entertainment and live concert industry that is reeling from eighteen months of non stop trials. Cancellations of major shows from KISS to String Cheese Incident, Stevie Nicks, Neil Young, Garth Brooks and more.
And even events that are happening have had great difficulty. The concert in Central Park that was to symbolize the reopening of New York City was cut short, in mid song by Barry Mannilow, by Hurricane Henri.
Our deepest sympathies lay with everyone effected by the terrible storms, the difficult conditions, and a streak of luck that just won’t seem to quit. It is important to remember that production crews, musicians, tour personnel, venue personnel- all have been reeling for a year and a half while their entire livelihood was disrupted. As we approach Fall, it is difficult to see if the industry can turn a corner and move to inside shows while the pandemic is still in the grips of the Delta Variant and a nation that hasn’t unified.
